Senator Dick Durbin is not some wingnut on a tirade; his comments were characterized by a dawning sense of awe and shame at what he has been discovering about Guantanamo. Limbaugh and other right-wing apologists have turned this into their usual baiting game, and their tirades play very well in the USA, since in the USA these days we are living in a culture of fear. What plays well these days? Statements like "eliminate him" and "treason" and "treachery"...

The Church (in its many incarnations) has always excelled in the art of fear-mongering, and in the post-9/11 era they have managed to put this talent to a very effective political use. An antidote to all their huffing and puffing is to try to understand what it is they are really saying---cut through all the dire threats and predictions of disaster; look at what is beneath all the screaming. If you respond to threats and appeals based upon your fears, there is a great deal here to send shivers up your spine, but if you want to use your brain, there is not much going on in this "Wake Up" tour. We have become a culture of fear and fear is the prime motivator in these movements
