But is there enough time? Reading Susan Jacoby's very enjoyable book, Freethinkers-A History of American Secularism, I found a glimmer of hope in the current American gloom. Conservative religion has exercised great political power in the USA in earlier eras. We survived it. The same themes, such as the emotive war on science and the manipulation of fears about "foreigners" have come and gone before. Can we survive it again? The toxic politics of the USA, fueled by the grotesque Dominionist Christian notion of "winning America for Jesus", has accomplished nothing more than the provocation of a terrifying confrontation with Islam.
