Hullaballoo this morning skewers the faith-based madness afflicting the fundies of both the East and the West...

Charles Krauthammer Gets It Exactly right
by tristero

Then there is the larger danger of permitting nuclear weapons to be acquired by religious fanatics seized with an eschatological belief in the imminent apocalypse and in their own divine duty to hasten the End of Days.If ever there was an argument for voting against Republicans and other rightwing lunatics, this is it. We should all take this to heart.Oh...But wait a minute...Did I possibly misread this? Hmmm...Maybe he's not talking about Bush. Could he mean Iran? Here's the next sentence:
The mullahs are infinitely more likely to use these weapons than anyone in the history of the nuclear age.Oh, now I get it. He's using "the mullahs" metaphorically, meaning the "top banannas" in the government, meaning "the White House." Seriously, who else could Krauthammer be referring to? After all, since the US is the only country actually to use nuclear weapons, it's surely "infinitely more likely" to use them again than a country that doesn't have them and which experts believe is 10 years away from getting them.ht, The Anonymous Liberal

Irony from the Pope... When he cites a criticism of Islam and Muhammad:
"...things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached..."
can we ignore the sword of Christendom through history? Can we ignore the slaughter of the Crusades and on through time to the current manipulation of Christian "revealed truth" that has been used to justify all manner of violence against black people, gay people, female people?
Although this cite he produced is tangential to the whole speech, (the translation I read being concerned with "reason" and "faith" and the inefficacy of proselytizing by force) the enormous irony remains the 600 pound gorilla in the cassock and the history of Christian fundamentalist violence goes unacknowledged.

Prediction: The re-emergence of ex-governor McGreevey in a splash on the Oprah show will move at least one of the leading Christian preachers to join the Bush Terror Chorus and blame us queers (again) for the devastation of 9/11. Passions run high on the McGreevey mess, as a visit to the Huffington Post comments section will demonstrate, and the preachers know a good opportunity for rabblerousing when they see it. The travesty of the closet is the real lesson here, and Oprah will probably see that and point it out, and her own sexuality will again be brought into question because of this upcoming show.
