The bottom line is that gay people, as one Senator put it today in the DADT repeal hearings, have probably been serving in our military since Valley Forge. What is the possible harm in allowing that fact to be truthfully, finally, acknowledged? It was also pointed out by someone else in the hearings that the last upheaval in our military culture, the "racial" integration of the services, was accomplished largely during a time of war, so why are we getting jumpy about doing "the right thing" now?
